Career Girl Q&A: Tania DiVito

& ASC.

Meet Tania, one of our amazing account managers. It’s come to our attention that our account managers have lived nine lives. Did you know Tania has met Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson and Ashton Kutcher (that makes up 1/3 of the cast of That 70’s Show)? She’s also traveled to Africa, and used to play competitive baseball. Find out more about her here!

Where did you go to school and what did you study?

I completed my undergrad in Political Science at York University and a Public Relations post-graduate certificate program at Humber College

How did you decide to pursue a career in Public Relations?

I always thought that I wanted to pursue a business law career but half way through my undergrad I realized that wasn’t where my heart was.  After a bit of research and talking to a few different people I knew in the field, I immediately knew I wanted to pursue public relations.  I like variety and I strive in environments where I’m constantly being challenged, and in PR, especially in agency life, things are constantly moving so I’m always forced to stay on my toes, which is exciting!

Where was your first job and how did you get it? How did it lead you to your current position?

Straight out of PR school I interned for a fairly big PR agency in Toronto.  I was fortunate enough to be hired on and I stayed there for four years.  When I think back to the start of my career, I really believe I was lucky to have had the opportunity to work in a reputable agency and learn from some really talented people.  Of course, though, things change, but change is good.

A mutual friend introduced me to Cynthia and we met for coffee.  What I thought would be a quick coffee chat turned into a two hour meeting, and in the weeks to follow I met the rest of the ASC team.  After I had the chance to meet with everyone, I knew that ASC would be my next great adventure!

What is the best advice you would give to individuals aspiring to get into PR?

Love what you do! It sounds cliché but it’s the truth.  Public Relations is a lot of fun but it’s also a lot of work, and in this industry, you need to be willing to work hard to play hard.  Embrace every challenge and look for opportunities that will help you gain new experiences, both personally and professionally.

What is your goal for 2014?

Creating a budget and actually sticking to it! I’m the worst when it comes to budgeting.

If you were on a desert island what is the one item you could not live without?

I don’t think I’d ever be able to live without a nail file.  Odd, I know, but I literally have one in every bag I own, at my desk and in almost every room of my house.  I couldn’t imagine being stuck on a deserted island trying to build myself a private hide-a-away, breaking a nail and having nothing to fix it with!
