Be Our Guest: Aleesha Harris of Covet and Acquire

& ASC.

Meet Aleesha Harris, Vancouver-based personal style and beauty blogger of Covet and Acquire. Today, we caught up with Aleesha to see how she achieves her mission to prove that a real girl with a real body and a real budget can be really fabulous. To learn about about Aleesha check out our Q&A below!

What inspired you to start Covet & Acquire and how long has your blog been around?
I started Covet and Acquire back in July 2011 (I can’t believe it has been almost three years!) as a way to find my “fashion voice” … and to teach myself HTML and basic web design.

How did you come up with the name “Covet & Acquire”?
I chose the name because it pretty much describes the way that I shop: I covet items, simultaneously making a mental (and sometimes literal!) shopping list, and then I see which ones I can acquire — hopefully on sale. It has become a bit of a game for me.

How do you balance your amazing job as a Web Editor at the Vancouver Sun with blogging?
With lots of coffee and a colour-coordinated agenda! But seriously, my roles at The Vancouver Sun and C&A can sometimes be a difficult balancing act. As a blogger, you can find yourself presented with situations that you could/would never find yourself in as a journalist. So when I’m faced with those types of situations, I usually like to ere on the side of caution and think and act as a journalist would.
Both positions have afforded me such unique opportunities to carve my own niche in this industry — which is something I hope to continue to do in the future. And for that I’m very grateful.

What is favourite part of living in Vancouver?
Vancouver is an amazing city to live in for all of the obvious, much-cited reasons such as its beauty, culture and food — but I would have to say that my favourite part of living here is watching it change and grow. Almost every day I come across a cool new boutique or artisan in this city that makes me even more excited to cover local fashion.

Which designers, photographers, decades or trends inspire you the most?
Oh, this one’s easy. Helmut Lang, hands down. And Smythe Les Vestes. It’s all about crisp lines and bold-shouldered blazers in my closet — and these brands deliver just that.
Most memorable moment of Covet & Acquire?
Attending the Lucky Fashion and Beauty Blogger event in New York City was a big high for me. But really, any time I open my e-mail inbox or home mailbox to a new note from a reader or brand representative I still feel a rush of excitement.

What are you most looking forward to this summer? Any big plans?
I’m headed to Paris and London in the coming weeks — so I’m unbelievably excited for that. The food, the shopping … the blog photos!

What is your favourite summer trend?
I love embracing the light and bright colours of summer. The bolder the better! I spend the winter months cloaked in blacks and greys, so as soon as the sun shines, so does my closet. This year, I’m also giving pattern-heavy pieces a go.

Who are your style icons?

Emmanuelle Alt, Phoebe Philo and Blair Eadie of the blog Atlantic-Pacific — because that girl really has a way with colour!

What is your favourite product in your makeup bag?
Nivea A Kiss of Shimmer lip balm. I have ten of them going at any given time.

What advice do you have for an aspiring editor or style blogger?
I would say: Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Some of the greatest opportunities that I’ve had as a blogger and a journalist have come from me thinking of a story/post idea and reaching out directly to a contact. I think waiting for someone to come to you with something leads to missed opportunities. Remember, you never know what’s possible until you pursue it.
