DIY: Table-Top Hot Air Balloons

& ASC, Lifestyle.

Cynthia Yan, our resident florist, crafts-woman and calligrapher, has been busy prepping for a number of bridal showers and baby showers this summer. She’s pretty much making it rain on the shower front. Today, she generously shared with us her brilliant idea for her sister’s travel themed bridal shower. Do you want to shower your friends and family with love? If so, see below!

With wedding season upon us, it can get costly attending all the events leading up to the big day (i.e. engagement parties, showers, etc.) let alone the wedding itself. For my sister’s bridal shower the theme was “Love is a Journey” to represent the love of traveling the couple possesses. I decided to create a few hot air balloons to be used as décor near the candy bar– inexpensive, unique and easy to re-create!

Note:  This craft is easier with 2 people

What you’ll need:

  • Helium-filled balloon with a string tied to it
  • Small pot (or any small container to use as a base)
  • Ribbon
  • Rocks
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Step 1: Measure the ribbon to the desired height you’d like. I cut approximately 42 inches for a 12 inch tall piece (that’s from the base of the pot to the very top of the balloon). Tape the balloon to the middle of the base. A strawberry pint makes a great base as well. Add some of the rocks to weigh down the base.

Step 2: Tape the ribbon in a cross on the top/middle of the balloon.

Step 3: Tape the ribbon about 1/3 from the top, to the balloon.

5

Step 4: Tape the ends of the ribbon to the inside of the base, following the natural line that the ribbon is falling in.

6

Step 5: Trim the end of the balloon and cut the string that is weighing down the balloon to the bottom of the base. Fill the base with more rocks or any other item to weigh it down. Voila your hot air balloon is complete!

BONUS:  You can use a travel theme for almost any occasion. We also created a photo-booth station (“Passport Photos”) and created a parting gift with mason jars (“In-Fight Snacks”). Sky’s the limit!
