Today on the blog we chatted with one of our account managers, Laura Trubkin, to ask about her journey in PR. Read below to learn more about her career background, favourite projects and sweet tooth!
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I studied English at York University and then did the Public Relations program at Ryerson University. I also studied Retail Buying at George Brown College.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in Public Relations?
PR combines so many of my interests. I love communications in all forms. I first decided that I wanted to focus on public relations at a store opening event in Toronto – I found myself wondering about the logistics of the event and about the launch of the brand into the Canadian market.
Where was your first job and how did you get it? How did it lead you to your current position?
My first job was at a day camp. I wouldn’t say there is much of a correlation between that job and this job, but I did need to use my communication skills quite a bit! My first job in PR was at Faulhaber Communications. A friend referred me and I started there as an intern. I have worked with lifestyle brands ever since!
What are the top three things every PR girl should have on their desk?
A computer, a phone and a notebook (and pencil) are the essentials. Some water or tea and the daily papers/latest magazine issues are also pretty important though!
What is the most exciting project you’ve ever worked on?
I loved working on the launch of a Canadian headphone brand at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas and working with The Body Shop because of their Community Fair Trade ingredients. The recent Ann Taylor Spring/Summer preview in New York and the Casamigos Tequila launch event in Toronto were also both a lot of fun. I think what’s most exciting is still to come.
We know that you love baking (and we love sweet treats). What is your favourite thing to bake and why?
My favourite thing to bake is mini apple pies made in jars or ramekins. They are just really easy to make and I always have the ingredients at home. They are also really good. Maybe I’ll share my recipe in a DIY mini pie post on the ASC blog one day!
You’ve shared your love for travel with us. What is your favourite place you’ve travelled to and why?
I love, love, love to travel and see new places. It’s always hard to choose between visiting a new place and revisiting somewhere I already love. Maui is my favourite place so far – There are so many fun outdoor activities, great food to eat, and beautiful things to see like rainbow trees, bamboo forests, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and volcanoes.
