When I started my blog I was looking for a creative outlet. At the time I was homeschooling and in desperate need of sharing my voice with others. I thought blogging would be a good way of connecting to like minded people and getting heard. I started Amy Flying A Kite 5 years ago and never anticipated I’d be interesting enough to be interviewed!
How did you come up with the name “Amy Flying a Kite”?
When I went to make my blog, I typed in Flying A Kite. I don’t know where the name came from or how it arrived in my brain but I’m glad it did. I think it represents my hunger for freedom.
Do you have a “daytime job”? If so, where is it/what do you do?
My day time job is mostly blogging, playing banjo and occasionally taking pictures for people.
The best part about living in Calgary is all of the exploring you can do! You are only an hour or two away from the mountains and city life surrounds you. It is a wonderful city for the blended folks who like the best of both country and city living.
There are so many successful and unique restaurants in Calgary that picking one as a favorite is hard to do. If you like sushi, Fuji Yama on 17th is my favorite. For Vietnamese, Pho Huong Viet has the best selection and portion size. Other favorites include The Dove Nest for high tea, The Coup for vegetarian and Farm for all things delicious using fresh and local ingredients.
If you’re in town on the second Thursday of every month, visit the Telus Spark Science Centre for Adults Only Night. They open a cash bar, put on some music and provide fun interactive experiments for everyone. You can also visit exhibits like you would during regular hours, it is a blast!
Goodwill, Value Village, MCC Thrift. A Vintage Affair sells great vintage pieces too.
Most memorable moment of Amy Flying a Kite?
When I was invited to New York to meet other fashion bloggers and be treated to four days of fun. Some of the other girls invited were the most creative and inspiring people I have ever met. We got to stay in the iconic Gramercy hotel and everyone treated us like royalty. I was the only Canadian girl and I’ve spent the last three years wishing I could go back.
Style icon of the moment?

Making Floral Headbands. All you need is a headband, hot glue and some pretty flower stems.
1. Cut the stems so the flower is just a petal.
2. Arrange the petals on the headband until you like the design.
3. Hot glue the petals to the headband and make sure to remove any excess glue before it dries.
